Causes of Dandruff
Let’s go through what causes dandruff before we get into treating it. There are a variety of factors that contribute to this scalp condition.

The condition can be brought on by:
- Hair that’s been left unwashed for a longer period of time than usual, but might be due to excessive oil or sebum accumulation on the scalp. This can be caused either by oily skin or not washing your hair frequently enough with a shampoo.
- This is caused by a fungus called Malassezia, which is comparable to yeast known as Malassezia. (It’s common for it to be on our skin, but it may overgrow or cause a scalp reaction.)
- Dry skin
- It’s not uncommon for dandruff sufferers to experience skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis, as well as acne on the scalp.
It’s possible that you are allergic to the chemicals in certain shampoos or other haircare products.
Essential oils can help to reduce the negative effects of many of these.
6 Essential Oils for Dandruff
Discover how to use the most effective essential oils for dandruff and why they’re good for your hair. In recent years, you may have noticed more essential oils being utilized in natural dandruff shampoos.
Dandruff can be extremely uncomfortable and inconvenient. Using the oils on their own may help you manage scalp and hair health, as well as prevent itching and irritation from dandruff.
Tea Tree Oil
The first oil you should try for treating itchy scalp and dandruff is tea tree essential oil (melaleuca alternifolia). Tea Tree oil’s antiseptic, antibacterial, and antifungal properties cure the root causes of dandruff, making it my top pick. It’s also an excellent choice for people who have a Malassezia fungus infection.
A simple solution is to use a bottled tea tree oil shampoo. It treats dandruff and helps prevent infections.

Rosemary
Rosemary essential oil is an all-star when it comes to hair care. This essential oil has anti-bacterial, astringent, and cleansing effects, as well as promoting hair growth. It prevents build-up from forming on the hair and scalp, keeping them looking healthy.
The fragrance of rosemary oil is more pleasant than tea tree oil and works great as a replacement for dandruff therapy.
Lemon
Because lemon is anti-inflammatory, it’s a wonderful oil for dandruff. Lemon essential oil has antiseptic qualities as well as cleaning abilities, both of which are beneficial in removing greasy debris from the scalp.
This is the ideal product for maintaining scalp health if oiliness is causing your problems or you are prone to acne. The invigorating scent, of course, is a huge plus!
This is a great option for individuals who have oily scalps or acne.
Lavender
Lavender oil is well-known for its anti-inflammatory and relaxing properties, making it an excellent choice for a variety of ailments. It can also help with dandruff! Lavender oil is antifungal as well as anti-inflammatory.
It has a lovely scent and aids in the prevention of dry scalp issues.
Clary Sage
Clary Sage Oil is a good anti-dandruff essential oil that aids in the production of natural oils and sebum in the scalp. This anti-dandruff essential oil has antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral properties.

Lemongrass
Lemongrass oil has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects that may help cure dandruff. When 10% lemongrass essential oil was used in a tonic solution, subjects had significantly reduced dandruff symptoms when applied twice daily.
How to Use Essential Oils to Get Rid of Dandruff
You may use anti-dandruff essential oils on your scalp in several ways. Mix them with a carrier oil, a vinegar rinse, or make dandruff shampoo by adding a few drops to a shampoo bottle.
Carrier Oils
To prepare the diluted essential oil solution for application to the scalp, a carrier oil is used (in this case, avocado oil).
My personal favorite as a carrier oil is Argan Oil. It’s a wonderful hair care ingredient when it comes to dandruff treatment and hair development.

My next alternative, Coconut Oil, is a liquid form of coconut oil that readily absorbs. It’s non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog pores or cause problems similar to other oils. It’s an excellent method to prevent itchy dry scalp.
Jojoba Oil soothes inflamed skin and moisturizes it. It contains nutrients that will stimulate the scalp and promote its health. It has long been used in hair products, and it serves as a wonderful carrier oil as well.
Don’t want to spend money on a specific oil for combining with your essential oils? Olive oil is perfect in a pinch. It isn’t as absorbent as the options above, so after applying you’ll need to wash it out. It will at least temporarily decrease flakes because the dry skin absorbs it. While olive oil isn’t one of my favorite oils, it may be used in a pinch to soothe an irritated scalp. In fact, it’s great for hair!
Shampoo
Fill a large empty bottle with 15-20 drops of essential oil and turn any shampoo into an instant dandruff shampoo. Simply use one or a combination of the oils. Washing your hair using the same method as usual, add a quarter size amount of shampoo to your palm, work it into a lather and apply to the scalp.
Vinegar Rinse
You can also dilute essential oils using an essential oil vinegar rinse rather than using oil to dilute them. It’s excellent for both your hair and scalp since it’s acidic. The acidic nature of vinegar makes it ideal for maintaining the ph of the scalp.
Pour it over your hair, making sure to get the scalp and hair roots as well. Massage into the scalp after pouring it on. It is best if you can leave it on for at least 30 minutes.
If you don’t like the rinse, consider using my Aloe Vera Hair Mask instead. It’s also beneficial for your scalp and may help to restore it to its optimal state.
